Bradel Case Bindings: Flatback

Part of the Exploring Basic Book Structures Series

May 18-19, Saturday-Sunday 9a-4:30p

Learn the fundamentals of making a flatback case-bound book, like your favorite hardcover novel! We start from folding sections and sewing the text block, then move to making the case and uniting the two parts into one handsome structure.

This class covers the Bradel case, which utilizes a strip of connecting paper that allows you to fully build the case before covering it in cloth or decorative paper. At the end of this workshop, you’ll be able to make a journal from scratch or make a new decorative cover for a favorite book!

Rounded and Backed Case Bindings

Part of the Exploring Basic Book Structures Series

June 1-2, Saturday-Sunday 9a-4:30p

July 13-14, Saturday-Sunday 9a-4:30p

Previous experience: construction of a flat back case binding or Production/Bradel Case Bindings Level 1

Rounding and backing are integral parts of a book’s functionality once they pass a certain thickness—in this class, we will learn how to round and back a text block as well as why we want to round a book.

We will also incorporate either or both styles of cases (production and Bradel), think about headbands as a decorative choice, and consider labels!
